The American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program is a comprehensive training program that teaches people to swim and helps them be safe in, on and around the water. The program includes swimming courses for a variety of age groups and abilities. It also includes a wide range of water safety courses and presentations to help teach all age groups how to enjoy the water safely—and how to take effective action if an emergency does occur. The American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program consists of the following:

Parent and Child Aquatics
Developed for children 6 months to about 3 years of age, American Red Cross Parent and Child Aquatics builds basic water safety skills for both parents and children. Parents and children participate in several guided practice sessions that help children adjust to the water environment and learn basic skills, such as blowing bubbles and underwater exploration. Water safety topics and lessons are included throughout the courses to help parents and children learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water.

·         Level 1—Introduces basic skills to parents and children, including safety topics.

·         Level 2—Builds on the skills introduced in Level 1, with participants improving these skills and learning more advanced skills.

Preschool Aquatics
Preschool Aquatics courses are specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of young children about 4 and 5 years old and provide a positive aquatic learning experience. Preschool Aquatics includes three successive levels that help children build and improve basic swimming and water safety skills.

·         Level 1—Helps children feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely.

·         Level 2—Builds on the skills leaned in Level 1 and gives children opportunities to learn additional fundamental skills, such as breath control, floating and basic locomotion.

·         Level 3—Builds on the skills in Level 2 and helps children improve coordination of simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions.

Six Levels of Learn-to-Swim
The Learn-to-Swim Levels are designed to give participants a positive learning experience and teach aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The Learn-to-Swim courses help swimmers of all ages and varying abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. The objective is to teach participants to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water.

·         Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills—Helps participants feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely.

·         Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills—Builds on the skills in Level 1 and gives participants success with fundamental skills.

·         Level 3: Stroke Development—Builds on the skills in Level 2 by providing additional guided practice in deeper water.

·         Level 4: Stroke Improvement—Develops participants' confidence in the strokes being learned and improves other aquatic skills.

·         Level 5: Stroke Refinement—Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.

·         Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency—Refines the strokes so participants swim them with ease, efficiency and power over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with “menu” options. Each of these options focuses on preparing participants for more advanced courses, such as the Water Safety Instructor course. These options include—

Basic Water Rescue
Basic Water Rescue is a 4-hour certification course that is targeted to public safety personnel, aquatic fitness instructors, aquatic therapists and others who work around water. This course provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. It also prepares individuals for aquatic emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while assisting others. The Basic Water Rescue course does not provide participants with knowledge and skills needed to be certified as a lifeguard.

Personal Water Safety
Personal Water Safety is a 5-hour certification course for anyone wishing to learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, avoid aquatic emergencies and improve basic swimming, survival and self-rescue skills. This course is divided into five, 1-hour lessons, each of which contains in-water and classroom sessions. The Personal Water Safety course does not provide participants with knowledge and skills needed to be certified as a lifeguard. To be eligible to participate in the Personal Water Safety course, participants must complete a swimming skills pretest.

Six Water Safety Presentations
Water Safety presentations provide information on being safe in, on and around the water as well as the importance of learning to swim. These presentations can be customized to fit the needs of the intended audience. The water safety presentations include the following:

·

o        Water Safety Today (2 hours)—Teaches individuals how to recognize, prevent and respond to emergencies in, on and around water.

Longfellow's WHALE Tales presentations are designed to give children an awareness of how to be safe around the water and to help promote healthy aquatic recreation. These presentations promote a positive learning experience through exciting lesson plans, colorful posters and a dynamic DVD, which can be used to support 9 of the 11 safety topics.

Water Safety Instructor Course
The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course provides instructor candidates the training needed to teach courses in the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program by developing their understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions and how to evaluate participants' progress.

Safety Training for Swim Coaches
Developed in collaboration with USA Swimming, Safety Training for Swim Coaches is designed to provide swim coaches, officials, athletic trainers and others a foundation for aquatic safety and information on basic rescue skills. Safety Training for Swim Coaches does not provide participants with knowledge and skills needed to be certified as a lifeguard. Content modifications were made for consistency with the Swimming and Water Safety (r.09) program, including updating page references. Technical clarifications were made, at the request of USA Swimming, related to teaching and overseeing headfirst entries and racing starts. Several final written exam questions were revised to place more emphasis on knowledge of headfirst entries.
